🪕 History of Almonte Celtfest

Almonte Celtfest was founded in 1997 in Almonte, Ontario, by Brian O’Connell, Dan O’Connell and Terry Currie. The founders wanted to keep regional traditions alive, honour local Celtic heritage and share that cultural legacy with the wider community.

Fiddling and step dancing have held a strong presence in the Ottawa Valley for generations, providing key inspiration for the creation of the festival. During the 1990s, a renewed interest in Celtic music and traditions helped encourage the idea of an event that could showcase local talent and celebrate regional identity.

As the festival approaches its 30th edition, Celtfest is looking back on nearly three decades of music, stories, memories and community celebration, with anniversary programming and special events planned throughout the year.

Gemmill Park is one of Almonte’s main outdoor community spaces and serves as the central setting for the festival’s presentations, performances and activities. Its open green areas make it suitable for music, dance, family programming and informal gatherings during the weekend.

Almonte is part of Mississippi Mills in eastern Ontario and has a population of around 6,000 residents. The town developed in the 19th century along the Mississippi River and became known for its mills, industrial heritage and strong community traditions.

By road, Almonte can be reached from Ottawa via regional highways and county roads through the Ottawa Valley. Travelers arriving by train can use rail services into Ottawa, then continue by road toward Mississippi Mills and Gemmill Park.
