Queen City Mischief and Magic 2026 will transform historic downtown Staunton, Virginia, on September 26–27 into a large, walkable fantasy festival filled with more than 100 characters, magical creatures, potion activities, wand dueling, train arrivals, Quidditch-style matches, themed food, interactive challenges and costumed entertainment.

The community-created event welcomes more than 20,000 visitors and is entirely volunteer-run. General admission is free, with participating downtown businesses, nonprofit organizations and performers collectively turning streets, alleys, storefronts and public spaces into part of the experience.

Visitors planning other themed events in the Commonwealth can also explore Renaissance and medieval festivals in Virginia.

🪄 A Downtown Transformed by Magic

Queen City Mischief and Magic is not held inside a conventional fairground. Instead, the festival spreads across approximately 16 blocks of downtown Staunton, incorporating streets, shops, restaurants, alleys, historic buildings and public spaces into the event.

The festival celebrates magic across multiple books, stories and fandoms rather than operating as an officially licensed franchise event. The organizers explicitly state that Queen City Mischief & Magic is independent and is not affiliated with Warner Bros. or another corporate entertainment company.

Unlike stage performers who remain in one location, many characters move through the streets or appear at dedicated meet-and-greet areas.

Costumes are a major part of the experience for visitors as well. Wizards, witches and other magical or fantasy-inspired outfits are widely encouraged, although dressing up is not required.

🚂 Magical Train Arrivals

The railway is incorporated directly into the festival’s fantasy world.

Special characters arrive at Staunton Train Station, transforming the historic platform into one of the principal gathering points of the weekend. Previous editions have used multiple scheduled train arrivals each day, attracting crowds to welcome different groups of characters.

🌆 Historic Downtown Staunton

The historic downtown is central to the identity of Queen City Mischief and Magic. Rather than constructing a temporary fantasy village, the festival uses Staunton’s existing streetscape, architecture, railway infrastructure and nineteenth-century commercial buildings.

Much of the downtown architecture dates from the city’s period of rapid growth between 1870 and 1920.

The Wharf Historic District developed around the arrival of the Virginia Central Railroad in 1854 and contains buildings associated with the city’s historic role as a commercial and transportation center.

Several historic districts preserve large concentrations of Victorian-era architecture, providing the festival with a setting that naturally supports its storybook atmosphere.

📍 Staunton, Virginia

Staunton is an independent city in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The 2020 U.S. Census recorded 25,750 residents.

European settlement in the area began during the early eighteenth century. In 1736, Virginia Governor William Gooch granted more than 118,000 acres to William Beverley, whose property covered much of present-day Staunton and Augusta County.

Beverley laid out a settlement called Mill Place in 1747, and the Virginia General Assembly formally established the town of Staunton in 1761. Its name honors Lady Rebecca Staunton, wife of Governor Gooch.

The community developed as the administrative center of Augusta County and became an important stop on the Great Wagon Road.

Rail service arrived in 1854, strengthening Staunton’s commercial importance and helping create the urban landscape that survives downtown.

❤️ A Volunteer-Run Festival

Queen City Mischief and Magic grew from a locally organized celebration into one of Staunton’s largest annual events.

Founder and lead organizer Sarah Lynch helped develop the festival from a community book-release celebration into a weekend that now attracts tens of thousands of visitors.

The organization remains entirely volunteer-run, working with downtown businesses, nonprofit organizations, performers and community groups throughout the year.

Rather than bringing in a separate temporary commercial village, QCMM uses Staunton itself as the venue. That approach directs much of the visitor activity toward local restaurants, shops, galleries and organizations while giving the event a distinctive citywide format.
